The Kansas National Organization for Women condemns Judge Wilbert for his decision to allow a manslaughter defense in the trial of the murderer of Dr. George Tiller. Judge Wilbert’s decision sends the message that religious fanaticism can be considered a defense for murder.
His decision opens the door for a society that would condone vigilantism and violence against abortion providers. Mr. Roeder has already made his malicious intent toward Dr. Tiller clear through his repeated jailhouse confessions to the press.
Dr. Tiller had unwavering faith in the justice system. That system found him not guilty every time he was forced into court to defend himself against frivolous, repetitive and baseless charges. We must try to hold that same faith in the jury members to see Mr. Roeder’s action for what it was, a premeditated act of violence against a medical professional, father, husband, grandfather and friend. Kansas NOW hopes the jury will find Scott Roeder guilty of the crime of first degree murder.
